Get That Green Home In 2010 — 5 Tips To Start You Out
It’s a great dream — a self-sustaining house that can provide for all its own power needs and exist entirely impact-free. We’re not there yet, but like anything, small steps add up to big change. Looking for some simple-but-effective ways to make your home greener in 2010? Check out these 5 simple ways to start.
#5: Pretend You’re Tasked With Saving Money.
Treat yourself like some kind of magical energy consultant in your own house. Grab your notepad, walk around to each room, and come up with a cool, comprehensive list of all the ways your household can save a bunch of energy. Write it down, formalize it, and you’ll see that putting some of those things into action suddenly got a whole lot easier.
#4: Invest Now, Save Later.
They always say ‘a stitch in time saves nine’, and it’s a useful proverb for a reason. Take care of some of your wasteful expenditures — those old-style power bars that suck energy all day, or the idea of leaving your computer on constantly — things like that, which might require a bit of spending up-front, but will leave you in much better financial (and environmental) condition later on.
#3: Learn From the Old World.
You know a huge amount of the world don’t use dryers? They use a massive amount of power just to spin and generate all that heat, and not only that — they can shrink your good sweaters! Get some drying racks and spend the extra 10 minutes it takes to hang things up. Then wait till the next day or so, and you’ll be 100% dry. You don’t wear all your just-washed clothes immediately anyway, do you?
#2: Figure out ways to get Alternative Energy.
If you’re feeling ambitious, grow your ‘green’ fund a little more, and invest in some solar panels on the roof of your house, or another micro-source of energy. There are plenty of ways to approach it, and there’s never been a better time.
#1: Stay Fresh With Good Environmental News.
