Receiving Burpee Seeds Catalogues Means Spring Is On The Way
You know the winter is nearly over when you see the Burpee Seeds Catalogue arrive in the mail. Burpee has been in business ever since 1876 when 18 year old W. Atlee Burpee founded it. The company went out of family control in 1970 but came back to being a family business in 1988 when his son took over. Burpee has sold seeds to commercial farms, stores and backyard gardeners for decades and its headquarters is located in Warminster, Pennsylvania.
Atlee enjoyed experimenting with seeds that he got from Europe and tried to make them easy to grow and adapt to the climate. He came up with the Surehead cabbage first and then a better variety of carrot called the Long Orange. Most green beans of the time were string beans and he made one that did not have the string attached to the pod. He would travel all over the country talking to people who developed better vegetables and other plants and would purchase their seeds for the company.
Atlee died in 1915 and by that time his seed company was very popular sending out almost a million copies of the seed catalog per year. At this time many of his customers were farmers but home gardening was in style with the advent of the victory garden during the World Wars. Burpee seeds could be purchased mail order or from many local stores all over the country.
David, also known as D. B., Burpee experimented with hybridization and he cultivated many new varieties of vegetables and flowers for the seed company. His first successful experiment was in 1934 when he came up with the Double Hybrid Nasturtium. Next came the red and gold hybrid marigold that almost everyone has in their gardens today. Sweet corn was always white but people could not believe yellow corn tasted so good when he found Golden Bantam Corn. Yellow corn was always fed to livestock but this seed changed everything.
In the forties breeders from Burpee figured out how to change the chromosome structure by introducing material from an autumn crocus. This made new colors of flowers burst forth and this was especially true with a popular flower called the snap dragon. D. B. Also used this procedure on old fashion black eyed Susan flowers and he came up with the Gloriousa Daisy.
In 1991 George J. Ball, owner of another seed company joined forces with D. B. Burpee and merged. This created the largest and most profitable seed testing lab in the US. Today the company sells over 1100 different kinds of seeds.
The current Burpee catalog is downloadable from the Burpee website online. It can also be sent out by mail. This catalog is very comprehensive and includes many sections including flowers, vegetables, and gardening supplies. The products in the catalog are priced competitively at about 1 dollar and all the way up to 50 dollars and more some supplies.
Burpee Seeds has a wonderful guarantee. If their seeds fail to grow as they should they will refund any money spent. Also if a charge shows up that you did not charge they will work with your bank and help to refund what they can within the law. Burpee is a very reliable source for getting seeds for your garden and without Atlee and D. B. Burpee we would not have the large variety of flowers and vegetables that we have the benefit of today.
