Do we typically associate Japan with hot summers? I wouldn’t say so. The density of urban centres in Japan creates a particularly hot summer season: tall buildings, tightly packed with vehicles and people. Tokyo is a gigantic heatsink of glass and concrete, filled with human activity: it’s very warm. At the extremes of temperature in Tokyo, the weather is vastly different. There is typically a 20 degree difference between these temperatures with a 16 degree average day. How does 42.7 Celsius sound for a hottest day? Things reached this high in Adachi Ward, Tokyo on one day in Summer 2004. In fact, 40 consecutive days that summer had 30 degree heat and above, which must have been very uncomfortable to live through. 2004 was not freak summer even: most summers are that warm in Tokyo.
